“What can I do to be a good person like you?” – 11-year-old boy asked Peter Obi

An 11-year-old boy from Corona School in Gbagada, Lagos, has captured the attention of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, by inviting him as the Special Guest of Honour to his primary six graduation ceremony.

The young boy, simply known as Tolu, serves as the head boy of his school. He took it upon himself to reach out to Obi, citing his inspiration from Obi’s journey during the elections and the positive feedback he garnered.

Obi noted in an X post that Tolu’s initiative and curiosity moved him and he attended the ceremony and interacted with the young leader.

During their conversation, Tolu asked a poignant question that resonated with Obi: “What can I do to be a good person like you?”

Obi responded by encouraging Tolu to always embrace honesty, listen to his parents, teachers, and elders, and consistently do what is right.

He urged the young boy to study hard and resist peer pressure, emphasising the importance of a strong moral compass.

Reflecting on the encounter, Obi shared his thoughts, highlighting his vision for the future of Nigeria.

“In that moment, I envisioned a brighter future for the boy child, and for entire Nigeria, led by young trailblazers like Tolu, who will excel in various fields and bring positive change. With the best education and a strong moral compass, this young boy and every boy child will rise above their challenges and shine as beacons of hope to shape a better tomorrow for their generation,” he wrote.

Obi expressed his joy in playing a part in inspiring Tolu and many other children and youths across Nigeria. He emphasised that a new Nigeria, where young individuals can thrive and shine, is within reach.

The International Day of the Boy Child, celebrated yesterday, shows the potential and promise of young boys like Tolu.

Obi’s interaction with the young head boy serves as a reminder of the significant impact of positive role models and the importance of nurturing the next generation with values of integrity and excellence.
