UN General Assembly: Liberia President Calls For Global Support For UN Security Council Seat Bid

Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has urged United Nations member states to back Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in 2026.

He said this while speaking at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday.

As Liberia proudly announces its candidacy, we look forward to the overwhelming support of member states to vote Liberia onto the non-permanent seat of the Security Council, where we can work with Council members to advance peace, justice, and security, Boakai said.

Going further, he highlighted Liberia’s dedication to sustainable growth and human dignity, adding that the country is ready to collaborate with the UN and global partners to “achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and create a just, peaceful, and sustainable world.”

Boakai also noted Liberia’s long history with the UN as a founding member and stressed the need for the organisation to evolve in addressing modern challenges like climate change, drug trafficking, and the powerful influence of social media.

Today’s challenges compel us to rethink our approach to global peace and security,” he said. “The United Nations, as a beacon of hope for humanity, must undergo necessary philosophical and institutional reforms to meet the demands of this new era.

The President assured the general assembly of Liberia’s commitment to the SDGs, outlining Liberia’s progress through its Vision 2030 plan, which aligns with the SDGs.

He, however, acknowledged that poverty remains a significant challenge for the country, with more than half of its population still living in poverty.

Concluding his speech, Boakai pledged his country’s continued efforts to promote global peace and sustainable development.

“Liberia stands ready to contribute to building a better world — one in which no one is left behind,” he said.
