At least persons have died at the English Channel while attempting to cross the treacherous water to evade deportation hours after the United Kingdom approved a controversial migrant deportation bill, a French media reports say.

According to the Voix du Nord newspaper, the lifeless bodies were discovered on Tuesday at Wimereaux Beach in northern France, indicating . the dangers faced by migrants seeking refuge in the UK. Rescue operation is currently underway, with helicopters and boats deployed to search for any survivors, the regional newspaper said.

Amidst the rescue efforts, approximately 100 migrants have been successfully rescued and placed aboard a French navy ship to be transported to the port of Boulogne.

This tragic incident unfolded shortly after the approval of the migrant deportation bill by the UK Parliament, a move spearheaded by the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak.

The legislation, aimed at deporting migrants who enter the country illegally, has ignited fierce debate and drawn criticism from human rights groups, who denounce it as cruel and inhumane measure.

Under the provisions of the bill, the UK government intends to deport individuals who arrive in the country via precarious means such as leaky inflatable boats, a bid to deter further migration attempts and alleviate the strain on the asylum system.
