U.S. Presidential Candidate Jill Stein Arrested at Pro-Palestine Protest

Green Party Presidential Candidate Jill Stein was arrested on Saturday for participating in a peaceful protest against Israel at the Washington University (WashU) campus, along with over 100 students in St. Louis.

Stein was at the protest in solidarity with WashU students who had set up a campsite on campus and declared they would not leave until the management of the University to divest from genocide and boycott Israeli academic institutions, among many other demands.

In a recorded video posted to X before her arrest, Stein was seen saying she supported the students and their constitutional free speech rights.

We’re going to stand here in line with the students who are standing up for democracy, standing up for human rights, standing up to end genocide, Stein said.

Following Stein’s arrest, the communication director for Stein’s Presidential Campaign, David Schwab, said Stein had attempted to de-escalate the situation between protestors and police Saturday afternoon but that the police “were not responsive” and began arrests shortly afterwards.

In follow-up posts on Stein’s handle, the handler confirmed that her Campaign Manager and Deputy Campaign Manager, Jason Call and Kelly Merrill-Cayer, were also arrested. Still, her campaign spokesperson said,

We are not aware of any charges at this time.

As Dr Stein said, it’s shameful that university administrations are condoning the use of force against their students who are simply calling for peace, human rights, and an end to a genocide that the American people abhor, Schwab reiterated in condemnation of Stein’s and others arrests.

Meanwhile, the Washington Police Department (WUPD) has yet to release or place a charge on the arrested.
