Tope Awotona: From Lagos to Tech Billionaire

Forbes has crowned Tope Awotona, a 42-year-old Nigerian-American, as the richest immigrant and Nigerian-American in the U.S. As the Founder and CEO of Calendly, a scheduling software company valued at $3 billion, Awotona’s journey from Lagos to the U.S. culminated in this recognition.

Frustrated by the inefficiencies of meeting scheduling, he founded Calendly and self-funded it until securing a $350 million investment in 2021. Despite setbacks in previous ventures, Awotona’s majority stake in Calendly is estimated at $1.4 billion, making him one of the few Black tech billionaires in the U.S.

With a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Georgia, he has positioned Calendly as a leading business communication platform with 10 million users and clients like Lyft and Ancestry.com. Forbes hails him as potentially the most successful African American tech entrepreneur of his generation, emphasizing his significant impact on the tech landscape.
