Tobi Amusan Sets New African Women’s Indoor Record in 60 Meters

Nigerian sprinter Tobi Amusan has made history once again, setting a new African women’s indoor record in the 60-meter event. Clocking an impressive time of 7.75 seconds at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, Amusan surpassed the previous record of 7.77 seconds set in Kazakhstan earlier this year.

Despite her remarkable performance, Amusan secured second place in Boston, with America’s Tia Jones claiming first position with a time of 7.72 seconds, followed closely by Devynne Chalton from the Bahamas with a time of 7.76 seconds.

This achievement adds to Amusan’s already impressive track record, as she had previously surpassed the African record on January 27 in her first race of the season, eclipsing the previous record set by compatriot Gloria Alozie. The 26-year-old athlete’s outstanding performance at the Astana Indoor Meet in Kazakhstan saw her break Alozie’s longstanding continental mark of 7.82 seconds, set back in 1999.

Amusan’s dominance in the 60m hurdles event has been notable, with her victory in the final ahead of American Nia Ali and Ireland’s Sarah Lavin further solidifying her status as a force to be reckoned with in the world of athletics.

In addition to her recent achievements, Amusan made history in 2022 by becoming the first Nigerian athlete to win a World Athletics Championship gold medal. Her remarkable journey also includes breaking the world record for women’s 100m hurdles on her way to securing this prestigious title.
