Tinubu Approves N70,000 As Minimum Wage, Pledges Review Every Three Years

President Bola Tinubu has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000.

President Bola Tinubu has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000. The President also committed to periodically reviewing the national minimum wage law every three years. This decision was announced during a meeting with leaders of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday in Abuja.

The announcement was made in a statement on X by Bayo Onanuga, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media, during the second meeting between the parties in the past week.

Recall it was reported last month that Organised Labour had firmly stated that they would not accept any slight increase to the ₦60,000 offer proposed by the tripartite committee for the new minimum wage.  Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), clarified this during the Politics Today programme on Channels Television in June.

Last week, Labour leaders met with the President to discuss the minimum wage issue further; however, the meeting ended in a stalemate. The President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, said there was no negotiation in the one-hour meeting but “a discussion”.
