Sudan’s Military Chief Survives Drone Attack at Army Ceremony, 5 Others Die

The Sudan military has reported that its chief, General Abdel-Fattah Burhan, narrowly escaped a deadly drone attack during an army graduation ceremony in the eastern town of Gebeit. The attack was carried out by two drones and killed five people but left Gen. Burhan unharmed.

The attack comes amidst a prolonged conflict between Sudan’s military and the powerful paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). With fighting raging in the capital, Khartoum, the military leadership has been operating out of eastern Sudan near the Red Sea Coast.

The assassination attempt on Gen. Burhan comes just a week after the head of the RSF, Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, announced plans to attend ceasefire talks in Switzerland next month. Gen Dagalo emphasised that the talks would pave the way for a new Sudan. The United States, alongside Saudi Arabia, will host the talks, with the African Union, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Nations serving as observers.

As the August 14 talks approach, the situation in Sudan remains tense. The ongoing conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of nearly 10 million people. Previous attempts to end the conflict, including talks in Saudi Arabia, have produced temporary truces that were quickly violated.
