South African Sensation Tyla Named Best New Artist at the 2024 BET Awards

South African singer Tyla was awarded Best New Artist at the 2024 BET Awards on Monday, marking another milestone in her rapidly ascending career.

Tyla first gained global recognition with her debut single, “Water,” which not only catapulted her to international fame but also earned her several accolades, including the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in February 2024. At just 22 years old, Tyla became the youngest African artist to win a Grammy, a testament to her extraordinary talent and impact on the music industry.

In the early hours of Monday, Tyla accepted the Best New Artist award, triumphing over fellow nominees Ayra Starr, 41, 4Batz, Bossman Dlow, Fridayy, October London, and Sexyy Red. In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Tyla expressed deep gratitude and pride, saying,

This is such a gift to be here. I want to dedicate this one to Africa. I want to dedicate this to all the African superstars before me that didn’t get these opportunities that I’m getting. This is just amazing. Africa to the world, guys.

Tyla’s night of accolades didn’t stop there. She also won the award for Best International Act, outshining artists like Asake, Ayra Starr, and Aya Nakamura (France), among others worldwide. Her performances throughout the evening were nothing short of spectacular, captivating the audience with her energy and vocal prowess.

Additionally, Burna Boy, Tems, and Seyi Vibes received nominations in categories that were yet to be awarded, further highlighting the strong presence and influence of African artists at the event.
