Senator Kawu Reveals N21m Monthly Take-Home, Contradicting RMAFC Claims of N1.06m for Senators

Senator Sumaila Kawu, representing Kano South, has disclosed that his total monthly take-home package amounts to over N21 million, contradicting the recent claims by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) regarding the earnings of Nigerian senators.

RMAFC, through a statement signed by its Chairman Mohammed Shehu, announced that each of the 109 senators in the upper chamber receives a total of N1.06 million monthly in salary and allowances, which would amount to an annual earnings of N12.72 million per senator.

The RMAFC statement further broke down the senators’ earnings, specifying a basic salary of N168,866.70, a motor vehicle fueling and maintenance allowance of N126,650.00, and a personal assistant allowance of N42,216.66.

According to RMAFC, these monthly payments culminate in a total expenditure of N1.4 billion per year for the Senate.

The Commission also noted that some allowances are regular and paid with the basic salary, while others, such as furniture allowance (N6,079,200.00) and severance gratuity (N6,079,200.00), are irregular and paid once in a senator’s tenure.

However, in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Hausa Service on Wednesday morning, Senator Kawu contradicted RMAFC’s figures, stating that although his monthly salary is about N1 million, his total take-home package is around N21 million.

He added that there are usually some deductions by RMAFC, which can reduce his salary to around N600,000.

“The amount of salary I receive per month is less than N1 million, if there are cuts, it comes back to about six hundred thousand naira and a little something as salary,” Senator Kawu explained.
