Ogun State Government Retracts N10,000 Job Application Fee After Public Backlash

The Ogun State Government has reversed its decision to impose a non-refundable N10,000 administrative fee on job applicants seeking employment in the state’s civil service.

Governor Dapo Abiodun directed the immediate refund of all fees collected from job seekers, following widespread condemnation of the policy.

In a statement released on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, the governor ordered the Ogun State Civil Service Commission to return the fees collected, despite their historical precedence.

“These fees, traditionally charged by the Civil Service Commission on behalf of third-party independent examiners who administer and supervise the computer-based tests (CBT), are being refunded in light of the current economic challenges faced by the country,” the statement read.

The government acknowledged the economic strain on its citizens, noting that the aim of the recruitment exercise is to alleviate suffering and create employment opportunities within the state. The governor has also waived any future application fees for job seekers in the state civil service.

This decision came after the government’s initial announcement of the N10,000 fee sparked outrage among Ogun State youths.

The fee, which was detailed in a memo signed by Permanent Secretary Jacob R.O. on behalf of the Civil Service Commission, required candidates to pay the amount before obtaining application forms.
