Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential Candidate, has emphasised the importance of upholding the rule of law and the laws of evidence in the recent police invitation extended to Mr Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Obi’s statement comes amid growing public anxiety over the police’s decision to summon Ajaero for questioning.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Obi expressed concern over the weighty allegations outlined in the invitation letter circulating on social media, noting that the situation warrants careful handling.

He stressed that given Ajaero’s significant position as the representative of the NLC—an organisation that acts as an intermediary between the Federal Government and the workforce—the authorities must be transparent in their approach.

Obi highlighted the need for clarity on whether the infractions attributed to Ajaero pertain to his personal conduct or his responsibilities as the NLC leader.

He cautioned against any attempts by the government to use autocratic methods to undermine labour, which he described as a vital force in maintaining democratic order and stability.

“Invitations like the one to Mr. Ajaero are not unexpected in a democracy, but it is imperative that the rule of law and the laws of evidence are strictly adhered to,” Obi stated.

He called on the authorities to respect due process and avoid any actions perceived as attempts to intimidate or suppress the labour movement.

Recall that the NLC had warned of a nationwide strike if the police arrested Ajaero.

The threat was issued after Tuesday’s emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the NLC headquarters. The meeting was called in response to a police invitation for Ajaero over allegations of terrorism financing.
