The Nigeria Police Force has reacted to the killing of its officer, Superintendent of Police (SP) Halliru Liman, by military personnel, describing it as “senseless” and “unacceptable”.

Liman, who was the Divisional Police Officer of Wusagu Division in Kebbi State, was reportedly killed at a military checkpoint in the state on Wednesday, August 28.

According to a statement released by the Zamfara State Police Command, SP Liman was killed on his way to a monthly conference in Birnin Kebbi.

The command identified the alleged shooter as Hassan, a military personnel attached to OPHD Sector 6 in the Dan Marke area of Bukkuyum, Zamfara State.

“Despite SP Liman identifying himself as a police officer, Hassan reportedly shot him in the head, causing his immediate death.

“We are deeply saddened and disturbed by the senseless killing of SP Halliru Liman.

“The circumstances surrounding this heinous crime are alarming and unacceptable. SP Liman was brutally murdered by military personnel despite identifying himself as a police officer,” the statement read.

The Command called for an investigation into the killing, stressing that it was an unprovoked attack. “The police and military must work together to maintain peace and security, not engage in violent confrontations that undermine public trust,” they stated.

Both the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army are enmeshed in corruption and human rights violations against Nigerian citizens.

A 2019 survey by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) ranked the Nigerian Police Force as the most corrupt public institution in Nigeria, while the Nigerian Army has been indicted for human rights violations in various reports by Amnesty International and the United Nations.
