Niger State Governor Orders Public Attack on Cleric: ‘Slap Him Very Well and Arrest Him’

The Governor of Niger State ordered an attack on an Islamic cleric during a Fidau prayer he attended.

The video seen shows the Governor of Niger State, Muhammadu Umaru Bago, instructing his security detail to slap a-yet-to-be-known Islamic cleric at a public function.

According to reports, it was the 3-day Fidau prayer that was held for the late wife of the Deputy Governor, Hajiya Zainab Yakubu Garba, who passed away a few days ago after a brief illness.

In his address, the governor called for a cleric to lead in prayers. Unidentified to many, a cleric stepped out to volunteer an angry response from the governor.

In the video, Governor Bago is heard, quite angry at the cleric: “Did I talk to you? Are you an Imam?“

This led to the governor ordering his security details to manhandle him physically, saying: “Slap him, I say slap him very well. Oya, go and arrest him, deal with him very well and bring him back.”

The governor’s action was followed by applause from some attendees as he warned the crowd: “Everybody should be careful with me because I can be sweet and bitter at the same time”. He then handed the microphone to another cleric to continue the prayers.
