NAFDAC Recall Dove Soap

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has ordered the recall of Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap (100g), batch number 81832M 08, made in Germany, due to a harmful chemical. The soap contains Butylphenyl Methylpropional (also known as Lilial), which is banned in cosmetic products because it poses risks to the reproductive system and can harm unborn children. The chemical can also cause skin allergies.

In a statement on Monday, NAFDAC explained that the soap violates regulations because it includes this dangerous substance, which has been banned in the EU. Other Dove products containing this chemical, like body lotions, antiperspirants, and hand wash, have also been recalled in various countries.

NAFDAC stated that these products are not in their database, and the soaps are prohibited from being imported into Nigeria. They urged the public to be cautious, advising against the sale or use of these products.

“Importation of soaps is prohibited in Nigeria as per the restricted and import prohibition list. Beyond the import restrictions, soaps and cosmetics are parts of the items ineligible for foreign exchange to import in Nigeria.

“These products are also not available in the NAFDAC database. Importers, distributors, retailers and consumers are advised to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the importation, distribution, sale and use of the above-mentioned products. Members of the public in possession of the product should discontinue the sale or use and submit stock to the nearest NAFDAC office,” the agency said.

Health professionals and consumers were also asked to report any adverse reactions to these or similar products via NAFDAC’s online platforms or mobile apps.
