Kano Police Defy Governor’s Eviction Order of Deposed Emir Pending Court Hearing

The Kano State Police Commissioner, AIG Usaini Gumel, has explained the reasons behind the police’s decision to disregard Governor Abba Yusuf’s directive to evict the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, from the Nasarawa mini palace.

In a telephone interview with Punch on Friday, Gumel stated that adhering to the governor’s eviction order would be premature, given the government’s pending case at the State High Court.

The case concerning the eviction order is scheduled for a hearing on Monday, June 24, 2024.

The police will not evict the deposed Emir because the same government has filed a case at the State High Court on the eviction order, which would come up on Monday, 24th June 2024. The government is jumping the gun because the same government has filed a case on the eviction order, which is coming up on the 24th of June, 2024. So, if we carry out the order, it is like we are pre-empting the court because we don’t know what will happen there, Gumel explained.

Security measures around the Nasarawa mini palace have been intensified as more personnel have been deployed to the location.

Punch reported that at around 11:30 am today, all four major routes leading to the palace had been blocked by security forces.

However, despite the governor’s directive, the deposed Emir remains in the mini palace.

One supporter of Bayero, speaking to Punch, confirmed that the deposed Emir is still residing in the palace and is receiving traditional greetings from loyal conventional rulers.

Let me tell you, Emir Aminu Ado Bayero is still in the mini palace, and as I am talking to you now, he is receiving the ‘traditional greetings’ from those loyal to him, the source told PUNCH.

The source also dismissed circulating rumours about the imminent demolition of the palace, labelling them as social media propaganda.  Contrary to reports that bulldozers and excavators have been stationed at the palace in preparation for demolition, no such equipment has been brought to the site.

“I heard a rumour going around in some quarters that a bulldozer has been stationed at the Nasarawa mini palace ahead of the demolition. This is social media propaganda,” the source added.

The situation remains tense as the deposed Emir continues to occupy the Nasarawa mini palace amid heightened security, awaiting the court’s decision on the eviction case.
