The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal alcohol production facility in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State, seizing goods worth an estimated N200 million.

Acting on intelligence reports, NAFDAC’s enforcement officers conducted a thorough surveillance operation, leading to the discovery of makeshift factories in the Oke-Arin market.

Several packing stores and rooms had been converted into production hubs where various brands of alcoholic beverages were being manufactured, packaged, and distributed into the open market.

During the raid, the officers confiscated over 2,000 cartons of empty bottles and already packaged drinks.

In addition to the drinks, a mini plastic mixing tank, an improvised filter, and other packaging materials were also seized. Three suspects were arrested in connection with the illegal operation.

NAFDAC has emphasised the need for public vigilance, particularly when purchasing alcoholic beverages, as investigations into the illegal operation continue.

Recall the agency earlier shut down around 100 shops in Ogbete Main Market on Enugu State, for allegedly selling fake alcoholic beverages. During a coordinated raid, the agency confiscated a truckload of adulterated products and arrested four suspected traders.

In another joint operation between NAFDAC and the Nigerian Army’s 15 Field Engineering Regiment, an illegal alcohol manufacturing facility in Badagry was destroyed.
