Jigawa State Govt Lifts Curfew After #EndBadGovernance Protest

The Jigawa State Government has relaxed the curfew imposed on eight local government areas, which was in place from 6 pm to 6 am daily. The curfew, announced on  August 2, was in response to the unrest and looting during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.

The governor justified the curfew by stating that Jigawa is a Muslim-populated state where protests are deemed un-Islamic, adding that protests are not part of Jigawa’s culture and tradition, stressing that only Allah can cause or relieve hardship.

The State Commissioner for Information, Youth Support, and Culture, Hon. Sagir Musa, made this known after the Monday security meeting chaired by Gov. Umar Namadi.

The affected local government areas, which include Dutse, Kazaure, Gumel, Hadejia, Kiyawa, Birnin Kudu, Babura, and Roni, had earlier been under restriction, with curfew relaxed to allow movements from 5 am to 9 pm.

This was asserted by Musa, who explained that withdrawing the curfew was predicated on an extensive review of the security situation in the affected areas.

After reviewing the security improvements, people can now move without restrictions from these local governments.

The protests, which were a peaceful response to widespread hunger and economic hardship, left at least ten people injured, with some requiring hospitalisation due to tear gas exposure.
