Ghana Announces 3 Weeks Power Outage Over Reduced Gas Supply from Nigeria

In a joint press release on Thursday, Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) announced that the country is experiencing an interruption of power supply due to a reduction in gas supply from Nigeria.

According to the two energy companies, the power interruption started on Wednesday, June 12th, 2024 and is projected to last three weeks.

In the press statement, GRIDCo and ECG noted that the cause of the gas reduction was maintenance work a gas supplier from Nigeria is undergoing.

The maintenance has caused a reduction in overall power generation capacity in Ghana, which could result in load management over the period of the work,” the statement said.

GRIDCo and ECG, however, assured the public that they are collaborating with the stakeholders in the power sector to optimise available resources to ensure the minimal impact the reduction of gas supply could have on consumers.

In corroboration to GRIDCo and ECG, WAPCO also released a press statement, noting the current situation is entirely out of control despite having to meet the demand for gas supplies in Togo, Benin, and Ghana.

Meanwhile, the development disclosure has caused a chain of reactions from Nigerians, stating that Nigeria supplies gas to power Ghana’s electricity grid. Still, the Nigerian government provides overtaxed and non-frequent electricity for its country.
