Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti Biopic Shifts from Streaming to Theatrical Release

232

The eagerly awaited biopic on the life of the courageous leader, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, initially slated for release on the Japa streaming service, is now set for its theatrical debut.

Penned by Tunde Babalola and helmed by Bolanle Austen Peters in 2022, the film chronicles the story of a fearless Nigerian female leader who ignites a revolution against colonialism and patriarchy, reshaping the fate of her nation forever.

Starring Iyimide Ayo-Olumoko, Kehinde Bankole, and Joke Silva in pivotal roles, alongside an ensemble cast including Ibrahim Suleiman, Omowunmi Dada, and others, the biopic delves into the life of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the women’s rights activist who spearheaded the Abeokuta’s Women’s Union, challenging colonial and traditional authorities in pursuit of justice and equality.

Film One will handle the theatrical exhibition of the biopic, slated to commence on May 17th, 2024.

Previously acquired by a streaming service, the decision to transition to a theatrical release follows a bid for an Oscar nomination for Best International Film. Despite falling short, the producer has opted for a cinematic debut instead of pursuing the streaming deal.

This shift coincides with a downturn in the streamer’s investment in the African market, marked by layoffs of its Nigerian executive team. However, the theatrical poster for the film has generated significant excitement, showcasing key characters and signalling a departure from the conventional female-centric poster design.

With nominations for prestigious awards like AMVCA 10 and accolades such as Best Movie Writing at AFRIFF 2023, “Funmilayo Ransome Kuti” promises to captivate audiences when it hits theatres on May 17th, offering a compelling test for Nigerian biopics’ appeal to consumers.
