FIJ’s Editor-in-Chief Fisayo Soyombo Voluntarily Reports to Police Cybercrime Centre Abuja

Investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo has voluntarily presented himself at the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCC) in Abuja, following publicly available information suggesting he was wanted by the Police.

Soyombo, who arrived at the centr with his lawyer Abimbola Ojenike, shared the news via his social media account.

In his post, Soyombo raised concerns about his potential detention, indicating that if no updates are provided by dawn, it would imply that he has been detained.

In such a scenario, he stated that further updates would be provided by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ).

Soyombo’s visit to the NPF-NCC is believed to be connected to petitions filed by certain individuals, likely linked to his numerous investigative reports on the Nigerian Customs Service and the smuggling activities within the country.

This development followed the recent case of Daniel Ojukwu, a reporter for FIJ, who was released from police custody after spending 10 days in detention.

Ojukwu’s ordeal began on May 1st when he went missing, his phone switched off, leaving colleagues, family, and friends in the dark about his whereabouts.

Ojukwu’s family later learned of his detention at Panti, where authorities accused him of violating the 2015 Cybercrime Act.
