Peter Obi Calls for Urgent Actions to Save Nigeria's Growth

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate and Nigerians have criticised the Federal Government’s plan to purchase new presidential jets.

In a post on X, Obi described the move as “extremely insensitive” to citizens’ struggles, particularly when the country is facing its worst economic crisis.

He said Nigeria is currently trending globally for its economic woes, marked by high inflation, a falling currency, and widespread poverty.

Obi emphasised that the decision highlights the disconnect between the government and the people, demanding a more compassionate use of resources that prioritises citizens’ welfare.

“With rising insecurity, poverty, hunger, and homelessness, this decision highlights the disconnect between the government and the people. It is unacceptable and demands a more compassionate use of resources, prioritising citizens’ welfare,” he noted.

He pointed out that the presidential jets, with an average age of 12 years, were purchased when most Nigerians could afford necessities. Still, with the country facing significant challenges, including a high debt profile, citizens are in greater need.

Obi urged the government to focus on alleviating their suffering and solving their problems rather than adding to the nation’s luxuries.

The former Anambra State governor also drew parallels with the United States, where the Vice President’s residence is valued at $7.5 million, compared to the $15 million spent on Nigeria’s Vice President’s residence.

He called for an end to what he described as impunity, insensitivity, and shamelessness, urging the government to refocus on the needs of the people by prioritising education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.

As the country grapples with economic challenges, the decision to spend millions on new jets has been seen by critics, citizens and stakeholders as a stark reminder of the disconnect between the government and the people.
