Cape Verde Minister of Education, Amadeu Cruz

Cape Verde Minister of Education Amadeu Cruz has assured Cape Verdeans that the government is implementing “a set of reforms” in the education and higher education sector.

It is to achieve the national ambition of guaranteeing quality and inclusive education,” he stated.

This was contained in a press release following a virtual conference meeting held on August 17, during the 3rd International Summit of Ministers of Education and Human Capital Development, entitled “The Voice of the Global South”, organised by the Government of India.

Chaired by the Minister of Education of India, this virtual conference brought together ministers of education, higher education, technology and science from 19 countries in Latin America, Africa (Cape Verde, Ivory Coast and Mauritania), Asia and Europe.

During the conference, Cape Verde Education Minister Cruz stressed that despite the international situation, marked by wars, outbreaks or prevalence of pandemic and endemic diseases, and climate change, the government of Cape Verde is providing new generations with cutting-edge skills in the fields of languages, digital technologies, mathematics and human and exact sciences.

At the conference, Cruz highlighted the results of these ongoing educational reforms, namely improving academic performance indicators.

The indicators include the preschool coverage rate at 86.4%, the school enrollment rate in compulsory primary education at 99%, and secondary education at 70%.

Also, there was a consistent reduction in the school dropout rate, which in 2022 stood at 0.8% in primary education and 1.5% in secondary education, in progressive convergence with the indicators of developed countries.

Cruz also revealed the current and future challenges of the National Education System, namely the need to mobilise funding from international cooperation for the Restructuring of Pre-School Education, among others.

Cruz further expressed the government’s willingness to engage more and participate in debates on emerging educational issues to outline mutual ideas and design common strategies to face similar global challenges while leaving no one behind.
