The Burkina Faso government has extended the issuance of digital criminal records, known as “e-criminal records,” to all jurisdictions in the country.

The initiative, launched by the Ministry of Justice on Friday, is aimed at reducing the processing times of files, lowering costs, and tackling corruption.

Justice Minister Rodrigue Bayala explained that obtaining a criminal record was complex and costly, often requiring long travel. The new digital system was first introduced in September 2023, initially covering the jurisdictions of the High Courts of Ouaga and Ouaga I in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso’s capital.

The minister on Friday announced that the service is now available across the entire country, including regions with high-security concerns, like Bobo-Dioulasso and the Court of Appeal of Ouagadougou. The digital system now serves 16 jurisdictions, covering 31 Burkina Faso’s 45 provinces.

Minister Bayala further told the press that any Burkinabe citizen, whether born in the country or abroad, can now access their criminal record online.

Since the launch of the e-criminal record, 11,000 requests were processed from September to December 2023, and 16,000 additional requests were received between January and September 5, 2024, Bayala disclosed.
