After Nigeria’s journey to the finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Jose Peseiro announced his departure as the coach of the Super Eagles.

The team fell short in the final, succumbing to a defeat against the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire.

Recall Peseiro’s contract with the team expired last month. However, there had been negotiations with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for a possible renewal, but ultimately, he decided to part ways with the team amid interest from other suitors.

In a statement on his official Twitter account yesterday, Peseiro expressed his pride and honour in coaching the Super Eagles. He reflected on his 22 months with the team, highlighting the dedication, sacrifice, and enormous enthusiasm that characterised his tenure.

Despite the disappointment of the final defeat, Peseiro stated that he feels fulfilled in his role with the Nigerian national team.

Peseiro’s departure marks the end of an era for the Super Eagles, as they now begin the search for a new head coach to lead the team forward.

The NFF will undoubtedly find a suitable replacement to build upon the progress made under Peseiro’s guidance.
