Atiku Condemns Post Calling for Forceful Evacuation of Igbos from Southwest

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the recent call on X (formerly Twitter) for a protest under the hashtag #IgboMustGo, which demands the forced relocation of Igbo people from Lagos and other Southwest states.

The divisive rhetoric has sparked nationwide discussions, prompting calls for immediate government intervention to uphold the principles of unity and coexistence enshrined in the nation’s Constitution.

He emphasised that such inflammatory rhetoric not only endangers peace and security but also undermines the constitutional rights of every Nigerian to live and work freely anywhere in the country.

Drawing parallels to the tragic consequences of unchecked hatred in Rwanda, he called for decisive action to prevent similar outcomes in Nigeria.

“The Nigerian government and relevant authorities must take immediate and strong action against those inciting such hatred and division. It is imperative to investigate, arrest, and prosecute individuals promoting ethnic discrimination and violence,” he stated.

“Our future depends on our ability to live and work together harmoniously.”

Reacting to the issues, the Lagos State Government has distanced itself from the hate comments against the Igbo ethnic group posted by @Lagospedia. This controversial X handle claims to ” proclaim the virtues of Lagos.”

The handle has gained notoriety for its inflammatory posts, most recently calling for a massive #IgboMustGo protest from August 20 to August 30, 2024.

Gboyega Akosile, special adviser to the Lagos State governor on media and publicity, condemned the comments as “reckless, divisive, and dangerous rhetoric.”

He reiterated that Lagos remains a welcoming home to all Nigerian citizens, regardless of their ethnic background.

“The Governor of Lagos State views the post as an attempt to sow discord between the Yoruba in the Southwest and other tribes, especially those who have made Lagos their permanent place of abode,” Akosile stated.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu appeals to Lagosians to reject any efforts to create tension in the State and calls on security agencies to promptly investigate and bring those behind the handle to justice.”

Also, Sam Amadi, a former chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, demanding an investigation and prosecution of those connected to the handle.
