A fugitive from Guinea, Colonel Claude Pivi, was arrested in Liberia during a routine police check, as reported by Guinea News.

In July, Pivi was convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to life imprisonment during the trial for his involvement in the bloody 2009 massacre at a stadium in Guinea’s capital, Conakry.

The incident, which took place on September 28, 2009, resulted in the deaths of over 150 people and the rape of more than 100 women. Security forces, including military ruler Moussa Camara’s presidential guard, soldiers and police, violently suppressed an opposition rally against Camara’s intention to vie for the presidential election as against his earlier pledge not to.

On November 4, 2023, Pivi’s son led a group that stormed a Conakry prison to free former President Camara, Pivi, and Moussa Thiegboro Camara. While Dadis and Thiegboro quickly surrendered, Pivi disappeared.

Following his sentencing in July this year, a warrant was issued for Pivi’s arrest. Guinean authorities are now expected to request his extradition.

President Camara was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment, while other convicted persons of the 2009 massacre were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 10 to 20 years.
