18 Passengers Die in Ijebu-Ode Accident Due To Explosion Caused By Stored Fuel In Jerrycan

132

An accident on the Ijebu-Ode/Ore expressway in Ogun State has led to the death of 18 passengers after a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number XA 690 AKU caught fire.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) confirmed that the passengers were burnt beyond recognition, while one other sustained injuries.

Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer of TRACE, stated that the fire was ignited by an explosion of petroleum motor spirit (PMS) stored in a Jerry can inside the bus.

According to eyewitnesses and the driver, the accident occurred when the bus hit a pothole on the road, causing the fuel-filled can to tip over and spill onto the vehicle’s exhaust pipe, sparking the deadly fire.

The injured driver was rushed to Rona Hospital in Ijebu Ode, while the bodies of the victims were deposited at the State Hospital Mortuary in Ijebu Ode.

Akinbiyi urged drivers to refrain from storing fuel in Jerry cans to prevent such tragic incidents. He also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.
