UNIBEN Students Trapped as Three-Storey Building Collapses in Benin

Some students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have been trapped after a three-storey building collapsed in Ekosodin, an off-campus community largely populated by students of the institution.

The building, located on Ekhator Street, came crashing down during heavy rainfall early Saturday morning.

According to eyewitness reports, some of the trapped students have been successfully rescued, while efforts are ongoing to save others still stuck beneath the debris.

The Dean of Student Affairs, along with a university rescue team, are on-site, coordinating the search and rescue operation.

Speaking to Channels Television, one of the students at the scene confirmed that several occupants had been pulled out, with many sustaining serious injuries. The injured victims have since been rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

“The rescue team is still searching for one of the victims who is trapped inside the rubble.

She managed to call from within, and the team has continued its search to locate her and others still trapped,” the student explained.

As of the time of this report, the University of Benin management has not issued an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse or the total number of students affected. The rescue operation continues.
