Heavy rains in southern Morocco have caused devastating floods, killing at least 18 people and leaving several others missing. Moroccan officials confirmed the death toll on Monday, adding that 56 homes collapsed due to the flooding. Additionally, nine people remain missing. The floods also damaged drinking water, electricity systems, and key roads.

On Monday, Rachid El Khalfi, spokesperson for the Interior Ministry, stated that the government is actively working to restore communication and access to the flood-affected regions. He also urged residents to exercise caution during an “exceptional climate” event.

The heavy rains wreaked havoc across provinces like Tata, Tiznit, and Errachidia. These rains brought more water in two days than these areas typically see in an entire year. The General Directorate of Meteorology had issued warnings about the severe weather and predicted rainfall of up to 150 millimetres. Neighbouring Algeria also experienced heavy rain, leading to fatalities and missing persons.
