The Imo State Government is reportedly fining residents for using power generating sets and other alternative power sources despite the poor state of electricity supply across Nigeria.

According to a document from the Imo State Environmental Transformation Commission (Imo ENTRACO), one Nneoha Bakery was fined N2 million for emission of toxic fume/nuisance, waste or spillage discharge, noise pollution and blocking of drains, road with sand, stones and building materials at unauthorised places.

The document noted that the fine was a penalty accumulated from 2022 to 2024.

Imo ENTRACO hereby demands that you pay the sum of N2,000,000 within seven days of receiving this notice with the Imo state government treasury single account (IMGTSA) through the pay direct platform in any of the commercial banks, stated a notice with the letterhead ‘Office of The Governor’ dated August 15.

The State government threatened to prosecute the bakery if it refused to comply.

This is similar to a notice of fine to a resident of Enugu State by the state government, as reported by West Africa Weekly.

According to the notice issued by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the resident was fined N88,000 for using alternative power sources.

“You are hereby notified of your contravention of the law, particularly Sections 124, 125, 126, 127 and 128, by your environmentally unfriendly activities which include(s) the use of alternative power supply (Lister) in your facility which contributes to carbon emissions in the environment. Consequently, notice is hereby given to you within seven days to comply with the State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Enugu and in addition, pay the contravention fine of N88,000.00,” the notice read.

The ministry threatened to prosecute the resident if the individual failed to comply with the acceptable payment within a stipulated period.
