Residents Protest Over Farmland Pollution By Kaduna Refinery

137

Residents of the Kapam community in Kaduna State staged a protest against the Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company (KRPC) over environmental pollution. The protesters, mainly women, claimed that a toxic chemical discharge from the refinery three days ago devastated their farms, killed their animals, and harmed their health, particularly affecting children and women.

Carrying placards, they blocked the refinery’s main gate, preventing staff from entering. The protesters expressed frustration with the refinery’s failure to implement safety measures and provide compensation for the damages.

The community leaders estimated the pollution caused financial losses worth millions of naira. They also criticised the refinery for neglecting essential services like schools and healthcare. The protesters demanded immediate action from the federal government and KRPC management to address the environmental hazards and compensate the affected community.

As of now, KRPC management has not responded to the allegations.
