Kenyan Govt. Orders Mandatory Basic Firearm Training For NYS Officers

The President of Kenya, William Ruto, has issued a directive mandating that National Youth Service (NYS) recruits undergo basic firearm training to defend the country when needed.

Ruto disclosed this on Monday while presiding over the 88th National Youth Service Recruits Pass-Out Parade in Gilgil, stating that his government has upheld its commitment to recruit significant numbers of servicemen and women into the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and also ensured other job placements for NYS graduates.

The NYS remains indispensable to our efforts to enhance public service delivery and national security,” Ruto stated while adding that “out of the 790 officers recruited to the Kenya Wildlife Service, 447 were ex-NYS recruits”.

This is a 56% overall living to my directive that all security agencies must prioritise our NYS men and women because of their demonstrated discipline, capability and paramilitary training, Ruto further stated.

Following his administration position, Ruto directed relevant ministries, especially those of Interior and Defence, to ensure that the paramilitary training NYS recruits undergo an introductory course in handling firearms ‘to make sure that they stand ready to protect the country when the need arises.’
