Protest Prisons Red Zones

The Federal Government has declared all 256 prisons nationwide as “red zones” in anticipation of the planned #EndBadGovernance peaceful protests on August 1.

Red zones are areas classified based on their security and safety levels, requiring strict guidelines and permissions for access.

Haliru Nababa, the Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), announced in a statement issued by Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO) Abubakar Umar on Tuesday in Abuja.

Nababa emphasised that individuals or groups without official business should avoid these custodial centres.

He said:

“In view of the purported national protest scheduled to be held on August 1, the service wishes to inform the public that the prisons have been designated as red zones.

“Furthermore, the service wishes to urge the public to know that custodial and non-custodial centres are critical national assets germane to public safety and national security.

“Tampering with or attacking them will lead to a breakdown of law and order and further exacerbate the security of the society in general,” he said.

Nababa added that security measures have been beefed up in custodial centres nationwide to “ensure that no correctional facility is defiled.”

He also stated that the Ministry of Interior Joint Taskforce (MOIJTF) has been activated to provide extra security in and around custodial facilities nationwide.

This follows a similar directive from the Nigeria Customs Services (NCS), which has ordered increased security measures at the country’s borders.
