At least three construction workers lost their lives in a building collapse in Lagos.  The tragic event occurred when a building under construction collapsed in the early hours of Thursday at No. 13, Wilson Mba Street, Arowojobe Estate, Maryland, Lagos.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) received a distress call about the collapsed building at around 3:49 am. A team was dispatched to the scene, where they discovered a set of three terraces under construction had crumbled.

Search and rescue operations commenced promptly, and three adult male site workers were recovered dead. Two people were reportedly rescued alive from the rubble, and one trapped individual was also saved. The rescued persons received pre-hospital care at the scene before being transported to the hospital, according to LASEMA reports.

LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident and stated that the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) had been contacted to handle the remains of the deceased. A combined team of LASEMA personnel, the Lagos State Fire Service, and the Nigeria Police Force is currently working at the site.

Building collapses have become a recurring issue in Lagos, with several incidents reported in recent weeks. The situation has been exacerbated by flooding in some areas. LASEMA has deployed an excavator to accelerate the search and rescue operations at the Arowojobe Estate site.
