Nollywood Shines at Essence Film Festival 2024, Showcasing Global Impact and Collaboration

Nigeria again asserted its dominance as a global cinematic powerhouse at the Essence Film Festival 2024. For the third consecutive year, Nollywood captured attention alongside major international film industry giants.

The festival, held from July 5–7, 2024, featured a standout panel on July 6, curated by Toyosi Etim-Effiong, Founder and CEO of That Good Media. This panel showcased some of Nollywood’s brightest stars: Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Uche Jombo, Simisola Gbadamosi, and Eso Dike, who shared the stage as speakers.

These industry leaders provided keen insights, captivating audiences and stakeholders with their experiences and stories. Their involvement highlighted the vibrant talent within Nollywood, further elevating Nigerian cinema on the global stage.

As the most populous black nation on earth and home to the second largest film industry, we need more visibility in global storytelling, and panels like this expedite that. Our participation at the Essence Film Festival not only showcases the unique narratives and talents of Nollywood but also reinforces our commitment to creating global dialogues through film, stated Toyosi Etim-Effiong in her opening remarks.

The panel, titled “Building Bridges: Collaborating with Nollywood for Global Success,” was moderated by CNN’s Stephanie Busari. The discussion focused on the transformative potential of cross-cultural collaboration within Nollywood’s dynamic film industry. Panelists explored strategies, partnerships, and creative exchanges, propelling Nollywood onto the global stage.

Topics ranged from forming alliances with international filmmakers to using digital platforms for global distribution. Uche Jombo emphasised the importance of telling compelling local stories with universal appeal. Eso Dike shared his experiences as a Nigerian actor in the United States. At the same time, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde stressed the value of staying true to one’s roots and building a supportive industry network. Simisola Gbadamosi inspired aspiring filmmakers by sharing her journey to working on a Disney production.

The Essence Film Festival 2024 offered a vibrant environment for networking, screenings, and insightful discussions, showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and storytelling expertise.

As the festival concluded, it was clear that Nollywood’s influence on the global stage was growing, paving the way for future collaborations and opportunities.
