UI Students Protest Against Power Rationing, Fee Hike

Students at the University of Ibadan are protesting on campus the recent changes in power supply announced by the university management.

The management’s decision to limit the power supply to just 10 hours a day has sparked widespread criticism among the students, who fear it will disrupt their academic and personal activities.

According to reports, the students are demanding several actions from the university authorities, although the protest started yesterday night.

Key among their demands are a reversal of the recent fee increase, the withdrawal of the memo on electricity rationing issued on July 16, 2024, and an end to the alleged victimisation of three students who participated in a peaceful protest on May 13, 2024.

In a circular seen by West Africa Weekly, released by the union, the protest aims to overturn the fee increase and secure refunds for those who have already paid the higher fees.

Additionally, they seek justice for Aduwo Ayodele, Nice Linus, and Olamide Gbadegesin, who were reportedly queried for their involvement in the earlier protest.

As part of the protest activities, the union has announced that it will boycott lectures and disrupt transportation services within the school arena for the day. The circular outlining these actions was signed by its president, Aweda Bolaji; its general secretary, Ogundijo Dolapo Japheth; and the speaker of the students’ representative council, Opegbemi Matthias Busoye.
