Ghana's Trade Union Congress Declares Industrial Strike Over SSNIT's Sale of Four Hotels

Ghana‘s Trade Union Congress has announced a nationwide industrial action and directed its members, including the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG), Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Public Utility Workers,  and Teachers Union, to lay down their tools effective Monday, July 15.

According to the Secretary General of the TUC, Dr Yaw Baah, the Union does not understand why the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) would give clearance to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to proceed in selling 60% stakes in four hotels after the union initially ordered SSNIT to halt the procedure.

With this, the TUC met in Accra on Friday to embark on a nationwide strike against the proposed sale of 60% of SSNIT’s shares in four hotels.

Following the meeting, TUC directed its members to lay down their tools effective Monday, July 15. In response, they have issued press releases informing their workers of the development.

Dr Baah, speaking to journalists after the meeting, made a clear call to action.

From Monday, July 15, 2024, all workers in Ghana must stand in solidarity and not go to work until SSNIT publicly announces the termination of the process for the sale of its shares in the hotels, he stated.

Meanwhile, the Rock City Hotel reportedly withdrew its bid following the TUC nationwide strike declaration because it did not want to associate its brand with negative perceptions.

The bad press the sale has garnered is due to the failure of the SSNIT board to engage with stakeholders,” says Rock City Hotel management.

Yet, the Minister of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has stated that the subsequent approach obstructs all government business until SSNIT decides to suspend the sale, which he calls ‘Operation Blockade‘.
