ECOWAS Organise In-Mission Training For Personnel Deployed For ‘Operation Restore Democracy’ In Gambia

Amidst the increasing political instability and security challenges in the ECOWAS region, the bloc is organising a three-day in-mission training for staff officers deployed to the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG).

This was disclosed in a press statement released Thursday by the bloc, noting the training aims to “strengthen the capacities of the newly rotated personnel in understanding the framework in which they are operating.”

According to ECOWAS, the training participants include the Mission Headquarters staff officers, contingent commanders from Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal, and the Gambian Defence and Security Agencies personnel.

While ECOWAS envisaged the training will help the personnel implement the proper operational procedures equivalent to their respective roles in the Mission, it is mandated by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government as necessary for Peace Support Operations.

Speaking at the event, which started on July 8 to 12 in the capital of The Gambia, Banjul, were the Commandant of Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (LAIPTC), Major General Richard Addo Gyane, the Deputy Head of the EU Delegation in The Gambia Mr Raphael Brigandi, amongst others.

The KAIPTC Commandant acknowledged the contributions of ECOWAS towards sustaining peace and security within the West Africa region.

Also, expressing gratitude to ECOWAS, KAIPTC, and the GIZ-EPSAO, Mr Brigandi stated that the EU is committed to continued partnership and support to ECOWAS efforts towards improving the readiness of its civilian, police, and military personnel for deployment.

Meanwhile, the ECOMIG, known for “Operation Restore Democracy“, is a military intervention in the Gambia with about 4,000 troops stationed in the country to ensure security.
