NFVCB Cracks Down On Same-Sex Content In Nigerian Media, Warns Filmmakers And Skit Makers

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) warned Nigerian filmmakers and skit makers on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, against producing and streaming prohibited and unapproved content. The agency expressed particular concern over the increasing presence of same-sex content on social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter.

In a statement shared on Instagram, the NFVCB highlighted the actions of specific “unscrupulous” content creators who continue to defy Nigerian law by depicting same-sex relationships. The Board emphasised that any portrayal, direct or indirect, of same-sex relationships is a clear violation of the country’s legal framework.

Filmmakers and content creators should be reminded that it is an offence to directly or indirectly make public show (exhibition) of same-sex relationships in Nigeria,” the statement read.

Additionally, the NFVCB underscored the legal requirement for all film and video content, including skits and musical videos, to receive prior classification from the Board before distribution or display. The agency reiterated that it is illegal to distribute or exhibit such content without proper clearance.

The NFVCB assured the public of its unwavering commitment to enforcing the law. The agency announced its collaboration with relevant security agencies to identify and prosecute individuals and production companies distributing unapproved content.

The Board, therefore, wishes to state categorically that we are working with relevant security agencies to track the individuals and production companies involved and will stop at nothing to make sure they face the full wrath of the law, the statement concluded.
