Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway: FG to Begin Construction in Calabar, Akwa Ibom

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has announced President Bola Tinubu’s directive to commence the construction of sections three and four of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

Umahi disclosed this on Thursday at the third stakeholder meeting with community representatives, stating that the sections will begin from Cross Rivers to Akwa Ibom.

However, he expressed that the commencement of these sections is pending approval of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP).

This announcement follows the now-terminated realignment, which, if not halted, would have destroyed the Okun-Ajah community and possibly submarine cables on the coastline.

Umahi clarified that subsequent sections will begin from Akwa Ibom and extend to other states along the route.

While the third section will start in July, pending approval from the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and Federal Executive Council (FEC), other segments [five and six] of the highway, starting from Port Harcourt, Rivers State to Bayelsa and another from Delta to Ondo State,” he added.

Meanwhile, the 700-kilometre coastal project, awarded to Messrs Hitech Construction Company Limited in April and built with concrete, is expected to be completed in 8 years and has a tentative cost of N15.3 trillion.
