Despite citizens' hardship, Osun Assembly passes and sends bill to Adeleke to raise Salary for politicians

Despite citizens’ economic hardship, Osun State House of Assembly passed a bill on Monday raising the state’s stipends for public office holders.

This follows the swift passage of the State Public/Political Office Holders Revised Rumuneration Package Amendment Bill No 2, 2024, which passed a third reading on the floor of the Assembly, as presented by the Majority Leader, Kofoworal Adewunmi.

According to the Speaker, the Bill, though yet to be assented by the Governor, Ademola Adeleke, aimed to improve politicians’ standard of living.

The lawmakers have made it known that the Osun State Public/Political Office Holders Remuneration Package Law 2007 is no longer suitable for current economic realities.

Hence, a new bill needs to adjust and meet current economic realities.

You will agree that the current economic reality is not the same as what was obtainable 17 years ago when the law was passed,” Adewunmi stated while reading the bill before the House.

He added, “In line with Gov. Adeleke’s five-point agenda, it has become imperative to review upward the salaries of some public/political office holders to better their living standards.

Meanwhile, findings reveal that Osun State’s poverty rate as of 2019 is 8.52%, with 68.52% of the population being males and 31.48% being females who are out-of-school children.
