The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has clarified the terms of the contract given to the new Super Eagles coach, Finidi George, dismissing earlier reports that suggested it was only a one-year deal.

During an appearance on Soccer Africa, a popular South African TV show, Gusau confirmed that George’s contract extends until the end of 2026.

“I don’t know where the one-year contract information emanated from, as far as our contract with Finidi is concerned, he is going to be in charge of the team till the end of 2026,” he stated.

Gusau outlined key targets in George’s contract, which include qualifying the Super Eagles for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), reaching at least the semi-finals of AFCON, and advancing to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

It was earlier reported that George had chosen the coaching team, which includes Daniel Amokachi, Benjamin James, Olatunji Baruwa, Chima Onyeike, and Mehmet Ozturk.

The NFF President assured that the federation is committed to supporting George and his team and addressing concerns about salary payments, which have been recurring issues in the past.

“For the coach, we are going to arrange how we will be paying on a monthly basis, but for every other assistant, we are engaging them on an invitational basis,” Gusau explained.

He added that the NFF is taking steps to provide George with a comfortable living situation, including a house, a car, and a driver.

Earlier, George had expressed his determination to meet the expectations set by the NFF.

“My first target is to reach the 2026 World Cup, and AFCON qualifiers will be coming up soon,” he said.

However, after the official unveiling, Nigerians reacted on social media. While many congratulated George on his appointment, others criticised the NFF for not being transparent about the contract details.

Some X users urged the NFF to ensure timely payment of wages and to maintain transparency in their dealings.
