The African Union (AU) has announced a three-day Media Convention in Ghana from Thursday, May 15, to Saturday, May 17, 2024, to promote press freedom, innovation, and sustainability in a dynamic media landscape.

The African Media Convention (AMC), now in its third year, is a pivotal event that brings together the AU, UNESCO, the Republic of Ghana, the Ghana Journalists Association, the Ministry of Information, and various media partners.

It serves as a crucial platform for these key stakeholders to reflect on the fundamental role journalism plays in Africa and to collectively address the pressing issues in the African media landscape.

According to a press release by the AU, the Convention (AMC) promised “a deep dive into critical issues facing African media” and focused on promoting access to information, journalists’ safety, and media viability in the AU Member States.

Other key objectives of the Convention are evaluating the status of press freedom, promoting public interest media, and paying tribute to journalists who have lost their lives while exercising their profession.

Also, the Convention stands as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom and a day of reflection on issues of professional ethics.

However, to find out more about the Convention as scheduled, the AU created a 16-page ‘provisional programmetimetable for journalists and media stakeholders.

Meanwhile, the three-day Convention is expected to produce outcomes that strengthen collaboration between media stakeholders across Africa and enhance public awareness of the importance of media freedom, media literacy, and digital competencies such as Artificial Intelligence revolving around the industry.
