Former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha has cited a misalignment between the party’s direction and his convictions as the reasons for leaving the party.

Ihedioha, who served as governor until January 2020, expressed his decision in a letter sent to the party leadership earlier and reiterated in an interview with AriseTv.

In his interview, Ihedioha emphasised that his decision stemmed from the desires of his “large followership,” both nationally and in his home state.

According to him, there was a prevailing sentiment among his supporters that the PDP had veered off course and lost its focus.

“It is in the light of the foregoing that I am compelled to offer my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party effective immediately,” Ihedioha stated in his resignation letter.

“My supporters, both nationally and at home, felt the party had lost its bearing and there was a need for us to forge ahead.”

The former governor lamented the party’s inability to effect internal reforms and provide credible leadership, even as it operates in the role of opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He expressed regret that despite his efforts to offer counsel, the party seemed unable to realign with his personal beliefs and principles. Ihedioha highlighted a lack of enforcement of internal rules and a failure to present a robust opposition to the APC as critical factors contributing to his decision.
