Owner Of Chinese Supermarket Accused Of Discrimination Flees Premises With Family

276

The workers at an Abuja-based Chinese supermarket revealed on Monday that the owner, Cindy Liu Bei, along with her family, has fled from the premises.

They made this assertion as officials of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) visited the supermarket. The workers, mainly Nigerians, reported that the CCTV footage confirmed the owner’s departure.

West Africa Weekly previously reported the shutdown of the supermarket by FCCPC officials due to alleged discrimination against Nigerians. The closure came after Nigerians expressed outrage over the supermarket’s discriminatory policy, which restricted entry to Chinese citizens only. Nigerians were not allowed to shop in the supermarket even though local items were sold there.

Shaibu Sanusi, the facility manager of the complex, acknowledged that while Nigerians from outside the complex were denied entry, those within could access it. No further explanation was provided as a reason for the discriminatory practice. The supermarket, located in the China General Chamber of Commerce in Abuja, remains closed for the meantime.
