Bayer Leverkusen win first Bundesliga title after 120-years

Bayer Leverkusen secured their first-ever Bundesliga trophy in their 120-year history, toppling Bayern Munich’s 11-year dominance with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Sunday.

Under the leadership of Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen knew that a win would seal the title with five games to spare, and they delivered a commanding performance that extended their remarkable unbeaten streak to 43 games across all competitions.

Florian Wirtz stole the spotlight with a remarkable hat-trick, while Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka also found the back of the net, sealing the triumph in a manner befitting champions.

However, despite his pivotal role in Leverkusen’s title charge, Victor Boniface remained humble, emphasising the collective effort behind the club’s success.

“I no lead anybody ooo. We lead ourselves,” the Nigerian striker shared on social media platform X Monday.

Boniface, who opened the scoring from the penalty spot and provided an assist for Xhaka’s goal, showcased his prowess with 11 goals and nine assists in just 18 Bundesliga appearances this season, despite missing four months due to injury.

Alonso expressed his pride in the team’s achievement, stating:

“This is a very special moment for the club. Winning the Bundesliga for the first time in 120 years is something very special. The players are top. I am very proud of everyone.”

With the Bundesliga title secured, Leverkusen now have the opportunity to etch their name in history by becoming the first side to go unbeaten in an entire Bundesliga campaign.

Additionally, they remain contenders for an unprecedented treble, with the DFB-Pokal and UEFA Europa League still within reach.

Alonso’s commitment to the club’s future was reaffirmed in March when he confirmed that he would remain as head coach for the next season, despite speculation linking him to Bayern Munich and Liverpool. Bayern, who are parting ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season, and Liverpool, who are bidding farewell to manager Jurgen Klopp after nearly nine years at the helm, had reportedly shown interest in Alonso.

However, the Spaniard’s dedication to Leverkusen remains unwavering as they embark on a new chapter in their storied history as Bundesliga champions.

Alonso said after the game,”Past coaches are part of it as well. It is very special when it is the first time for everything, and this is the most difficult title probably.”
