Meta, a parent technological company of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp is set to launch a Monetisation feature in June 2024. It is aimed at creating a means of income for Nigerian content creators.

Meta’s President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg made the announcement following a meeting with Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Thursday.

While making his remarks, Clegg expressed gratitude to Tinubu for assenting to an executive order that allows for the installation of Meta-backed deep-sea cable infrastructure in Nigeria.

It is an extraordinary infrastructure project. When it comes on stream in the first quarter of 2025, it will be twice as much as the capacity of all subsea cables that exist, he said.

He also added, “We buried the cable 50 per cent deeper than any other subsea cables under the seabed”.

Meanwhile, in light of the cables landing in Nigeria, Clegg estimated its economic potential impact on Nigeria’s economy to be $37 billion worth of increase in the next two or three years across the African continent.
He said, “We have a lot to do with Nigeria to deepen partnerships,” and affirmed, “We will, in June 2024, introduce a feature on our Instagram app that will allow Nigerian creators to monetise their content to enable them to earn a living using the app.”

The Minister of of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr ‘Bosun Tijani echoed the need to have Meta in Nigeria as he stressed the need for collaborative engagements in the hope of driving a technologically driven economy in the digital sector.

“We must continue to engage to create opportunities for our people so they can also share in global prosperity,” he stated.
