Truecaller Enhances Spam-Blocking AI, Targets Premium Subscribers with ‘Max’ Update

Truecaller, the popular caller ID app, has significantly enhanced its spam-call-blocking capabilities. It now blocks between 38 and 40 billion spam calls annually for its 374 million users. The latest “Max” update for Android premium subscribers leverages AI technology to block all calls that do not originate from approved contacts or are flagged as potential spam by Truecaller’s AI, even if they are not listed in its database. Previously, call blocking relied on database listings combined with user screening.

However, this feature is exclusive to Android due to Apple’s restrictions on caller ID services checking spammer status for automatic call blocking on iOS. Despite this limitation, Truecaller offers an essential service for iPhone users based on CallKit.

Truecaller’s move comes amid a crucial period for the company, which saw a 4% year-on-year revenue decline in Q4, totalling $41.52 million in sales. In its largest market, India, the company faces regulatory challenges as the telecom regulator proposed a Truecaller-like caller ID service for all telecom networks in the country, potentially posing a competitive threat.

The Max update reflects Truecaller’s belief in addressing users’ frustration with spam calls, even if it risks missing calls from unknown numbers or legitimate callers. With premium tiers ranging from $9.99 per month to $99.99 per year, Truecaller aims to capitalise on AI interest and grow premium sign-ups.

While Truecaller has always provided users with potential call-blocking options, the Max feature introduces proactive automation, minimising user engagement. Truecaller’s AI, powered by multiple algorithms, continually learns from user feedback and data to enhance spam detection accuracy.

Despite potential mistakes, Truecaller assures users of ongoing improvements and the ability to unblock wrongly marked numbers, contributing to AI training.
