Asake’s New Video Sparks Christian Outrage

252

Nigerian Afrobeats sensation, Asake, has stirred controversy with the release of his latest music video, “Only Me,” which has been accused of “mocking” Christianity. In the video, Asake is seen wearing Christian attire, complete with a halo, while throwing money at dancers who then collapse. The video, which premiered on Thursday, has faced widespread criticism on social media platforms.

Despite attempts to reach out to Asake’s management for comment, they have not responded. Social media users have condemned the video, with one stating, “Asake keeps disrespecting the Christian faith in his music videos.” The lyrics of the song, particularly the refrain “we get money,” coupled with the imagery, have led to accusations of mockery towards Christianity.

This is not the first time Asake has faced backlash for his use of Christian imagery in music videos. His previous collaboration with Fireboy DML, “Bandana,” also attracted criticism for depicting black goats in a church setting. Fans have expressed their disappointment and called for the removal of the “Only Me” video, citing it as an insult to their Christian faith.

Asake’s artistic choices have sparked a debate about the boundaries between artistic expression and religious sensitivity. While some fans continue to support his music, others emphasize the importance of respecting religious beliefs in creative endeavours. The controversy surrounding “Only Me” highlights the complex relationship between music, religion, and societal values.
